I would like to read more. But if I leave picking books up to chance, I will read less. So this year, I’ve chosen school subjects as my theme. I picked 12 subjects and 12 books related to each one. This list order was randomly created and here we are, starting with English. I brought up a list of books that the internet claims kids still read. 1984 was on the list and I did not read that one.
I’m at about the halfway point. I did see Julia as a friend. Maybe not this friendly. Did I choose this book because of the times? Not consciously. But the idea of rewriting history and people soaking it up without question is quite relatable.
The Julia twist happened with a lot of time left. I’m starting to think she won’t make it to page 200. Mr Charrington, will he turn out to be a mastermind for the resistance? Is the absentmindedness an act.
She survived to page 200! I still fear for her safety.
We’ve also reached the point where O’Brien has approached him. Still a lot of pages to go. I’m going to guess Mr Charrington is at the house when he visits O’Brien.
OK, so far I was wrong about that.
Is this still a set up? Are they being used as an example of the Brotherhood? I don't think so? I still feel like Mr. Carrington is more than he appears. Could he be the head of the Brotherhood! What dastardly deeds will they have these two kids do?
I am not good at predicting this book. Does Mr. Carrington have one more reveal, or is this couple screwed?
I'm hoping this is just a test and not a set up. They barely gave them any time to do anything! But I suppose that is the Big Brother way. I suppose I am now thinking Julia is a double agent. If she is still alive.
I was thinking “there’s still a lot left in this book”. There will be a revolt, she will have set him up. They will find each other. Turns out this is not that kind of book. It’s a warning and warnings don’t come with a side of hero wins. That would make it seem like it will be OK. Just about every twist and turn I was expecting was wrong.
How long have we been thinking that we are living in the world of 1984?
